Yousuf Karsh, born December 23, 1908, in the Ottoman Empire, now Turkey, was destined for photography at a young age. Around the age of 15, Karsh left Turkey to live with his photographer uncle in Canada, where the well known portrait photographer would learn everything. A.G. Nakash realized his nephews talent and sent Karsh to work in Boston, Massachusetts, under his friend John Garo, a famous portrait photographer. In 1931, Karsh moved back to Canada and opened a portrait studio in Ottowa, which led to his love for taking portraits in black and white.
The portrait photographer captures public figures and other citizens who he believes to be helping and influencing the community in positive ways. Karsh captures his subjects in a natural looking way that flatters his subject although the audience can tell the people are posing, they do not look unnatural. I also really enjoy that most of his photos are in black and white, it leaves a lot to the imagination and is refreshing to see a photo without color. Annie Leibovitz, also a popular portrait photographer, takes similar photos to Yousuf's but Leibovitz' photos are in color and look more staged. I do like both artists' work but I believe Karsh captures his subjects in a more natural and appealing way.
Yousuf Karsh was apart of a society that believed in a better world to come through excellence of scientific discovery. Karsh wanted to show his viewers the dignity and good in human beings in our world today. The photographer wanted to explore the idea in showing people who better our society through art and other human rights.
The photographer's main influence for his work was his uncle from Canada, A.G. Nakash. Nakash gifted Karsh with a small camera and as a young boy, he would take photos around fields and woods. This has influenced my work to pay more attention to small details and roam around more, photographing anything in sight.
The portrait of Humphrey Bogart is similar to the photo of my good friend Aidan through the detail in the photo. Karsh paid very close attention to detail, so I wanted to make sure the photo I took looked as similar as possible. Both are holding a lit cigarette, have their hands in the same position, and had their brows slightly raised. The photos contrast through the ways the men are looking and the type of edit the photos have. This is the same for Audrey Hepburn's portrait and JFK's portrait. Both photos are similar to Karsh's, especially JFK's portrait as my good friend Nate looks very similar to the former president. The photos are also different, the setting is different and also the facial expressions for both photos. Like Audrey Hepburn, my dear friend Bess, is as petite and beautiful as the famous actress. Although, Bess' chin is not as raised and the hair styles are not the same, both photos are extremely unique and similar.
All these images show uniqueness and individuality through the people and tell a brief story into their daily life. Bess; smart, beautiful, and hard working. From the photo, the viewer can see she is radiant like Audrey Hepburn, a very simple girl who works hard to accomplish anything she sets her mind too. Nate; intelligent, strong, and a leader, similar to John Kennedy. Lastly, Aidan; caring, friendly, and clever, like Humphrey Bogart. I believe these photos strongly relate to Yousuf Karsh's portraits as all the photos display unique and strong personalities.
